The Lab operates on a dynamic 3-year cycle:
Year 1: Individual Musicians and Composers
In the first year, we invite individual musicians and composers to join the Lab for an immersive experience where they can focus on developing new works and experimenting with novel ideas. Through mentorship, collaboration, and exploration, participants create boundary-pushing music and engage in conversations about the intersection of art and technology.Year 2: Ensembles and Composers
In the second year, we invite both composers and ensembles to join forces, creating opportunities for collaborative work across different disciplines. This year emphasizes large-scale, experimental projects, combining composition, performance, sound installation, and even puppetry—where the boundaries between disciplines are blurred, and anything is possible.Year 3: Alumni Network and Self-Producing
In the third year, we focus on building and nurturing the lab’s alumni network. This includes self-produced concerts through our Migration Series, which highlights the work of our alumni via self-produced concerts around the globe, and the Exploration Institute, a unique micro-residency that brings artists together with astronomers at Yerkes Observatory to foster interdisciplinary creative work. The cycle culminates in The Eyrie Festival, a week-long celebration featuring new works created at the Lab, bringing together over 100 alumni, performers, and collaborators.
The Next Cycle: Fall 2025
The next Creative Lab cycle will begin in Fall 2025, focusing on individual musicians and composers. During this time, we will also host The Eyrie Festival, showcasing the incredible work generated by our community of artists. It’s a time for reflection, collaboration, and celebration as we come together to share what we’ve built.
